If you’re a writer, who’s in the end using your newsletter to sell books, is that not a contradiction of the Substack terms of service? “Substack is intended for high quality editorial content, not conventional email marketing. We don’t permit publications whose primary purpose is to advertise external products or services, drive traffic to third party sites, distribute offers and promotions, enhance search engine optimization, or similar activities.”

Hi Rick! Great question. Correct, you can't just come here and post 'Buy my book!' over and over again (that's breaking the TOS here and on social media as well). A newsletter should be newsy, not an ad.

If I understand your question, am I saying people should use their newsletter to "sell" books? No. I'm saying use SS (or any other platform) for building relationships with readers, providing valuable content, and connecting in a way that's off socials.

If you peruse my content, you'll see that I rarely 'sell' my books. I provide tips and resources.

Does that make sense? Thank you for weighing in.

I understand that the majority of the time, you’re trying to connect and build some community. But I don’t know a single writer who doesn’t, when they have a new release, send out launch emails with links to buy, or when they have a sale, send that info out as well. So I don’t know that substack is a newsletter replacement — I don’t know how much they police it, but if you’re building your list on it, you’re taking a risk of losing your platform.
